Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) Common dove of North America found in almost every habitat, except dense forests. Its mournful call can frequently be heard in residential areas. It has a soft brown body with a small head and a long, tapered tail bordered by white at the edges. Mourning Dove wings make a whistling sound in flight. They build loose flimsy nests that frequently fall apart in high winds. Picture taken 6/6/04. |

Two young Mourning Doves were brought after a nest fell apart. They were raised at
the Center and successfully released. These pictures show them fully grown shortly before
the release.
